Acupuncture reduces the side effects of Clomid
Also known as Clomifene, it is often the first fertility drug given to women by their doctors. It's cheap and easy to administer. It works by blocking the feedback actions of oestrogen thereby tricking the pituitary gland to produce more and more FSH to make the eggs grow and mature.
It should not be given to woman with ovarian cysts, are pregnant, hormone dependant tumours, abnormal uterine bleeding of unknown cause or those with severe liver disease, as it increases levels of oestradiol.
Side effects include ovarian hyperstimulation, uterine fibroids, ectopic pregnancies, visual disturbances, hot flushes, abdominal discomfort, nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, inter-menstrual spotting, endometriosis, convulsions, weight gain, rashes, dizziness and hair loss.
Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the side effects of Clomid by thicken the endometrial lining and reducing the high levels of oestradiol. Recent research has shown that combining Clomid with Chinese herbs significantly improves PCOS.
