Morning sickness is the common name given to nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). Despite the name, nausea or vomiting can occur at any time during the day.
Generally, pregnant women have morning sickness during early pregnancy, in the first trimester up till 12 weeks or 20 weeks. Symptoms will come and go several times a day. However, some women with morning sickness can still experience nausea after 20 weeks.
Eating little and often, for example every 2 hours can reduce the symptoms of nausea. Often dry foods such as bread and crackers are eaten along with carbonated drinks, all of which can help to settle the stomach and reduce feelings of nausea.
Triggers of morning sickness include feeling hungry along with the smell of food. For this reason, pregnant women who suffer from nausea find it hard to cook or open the fridge door.
Acupuncture for morning sickness
Acupuncture for pregnancy is helpful in reducing the symptoms of morning sickness and reduce nausea. The main acupuncture point used is neiguan (PC 6), which is the point at which travel sickness bands are placed on wrists.
