Dysmenorrhoea

Diagnosis

Pain before or during the menstrual bleed. The pain can be a dull throbbing or a stabbing sensation. An ultrasound or laparoscopy is used to see if any fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, tumours or inflammation can be seen. In western medicine, dysmenorrhoea can be caused by either:

  • High levels of progesterone
  • Contraction of blood vessels to the uterus (uterine ischaemia)
