Acupuncture regulates oestrogen levels and improves female fertility
Oestrogens are vital in a variety of bodily functions. In fertility their main functions are to maintain female reproductive glands and organs including cervical mucous, libido as well as repair and regenerate the uterus (endometrial) lining.
Oestrogens are made up of three hormones; oestradiol, oestrone and oestriol. The most abundant and therefore the most important one for fertility is oestradiol (also known as 17 beta oestradiol or E2).
It’s important to maintain normal levels of oestrogen. High levels are associated with cancers and can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) during IVF. Oestrogen levels should not exceed 6000 pg/mL.
Unfortunately, we are surrounded by oestrogens in our environment. It’s in our food (meat and milk), chemicals, plastics, cosmetics, flame-retardants, dust and even in our water. Our modern lives have introduced massive amounts of oestrogens into the environment and ourselves. This is one of the main reasons for the continued decline in male fertility over the last 70 years and an increase in cancer rates.
Research has shown that acupuncture is able to regulate oestrogen levels in women. This helps to normalise the menstrual cycle and improve fertility. It’s also important to reduce your exposure to oestrogen in your day to day life, for example by reducing your use of plastics.
