Acupressure for fever

Acupressure can be a gentle supportive measure for a mild fever, helping the body clear Heat and easing the aches and discomfort that come with it. The points below are the classical Heat-clearing points of Chinese medicine. They are a comfort measure alongside rest, fluids and ordinary fever care — not a treatment for the underlying infection. A fever is the body's normal response to infection; the priority is always to identify and manage the cause. Seek medical care urgently for a high fever, a fever with a stiff neck or rash, a fever in a baby under 3 months, or any fever that worries you (see red flags below).

The core points

GV 14 (Dazhui) — “Great Hammer”

Location. On the midline at the base of the neck, in the hollow just below the prominent vertebra (C7) that sticks out when the head is bent forward.

Technique. Firm pressure with the fingertip for 1–2 minutes; a partner can press more easily. A cool compress over this point also helps.

Why. The single most important point for clearing Heat and fever in classical acupuncture — the meeting point of all the Yang channels, where the body's Heat concentrates. The traditional point of choice to release an exterior fever.

LI 11 (Quchi) — “Pool at the Bend”

Location. At the outer end of the elbow crease when the elbow is bent — midway between the crease end and the bony point of the elbow.

Technique. Firm thumb pressure for 1–2 minutes per arm.

Why. The strongest Heat-clearing point on the arm. Classically combined with GV 14 and LI 4 to bring down a fever and ease the associated body aches.

LI 4 (Hegu) — “Joining Valley”

Location. On the back of the hand, in the web between thumb and index finger.

Technique. Firm thumb pressure for 1–2 minutes per hand.

Why. Releases the exterior and clears Heat from the whole body; eases the headache and body aches of a feverish cold. Avoid strong pressure in pregnancy.

LU 11 (Shaoshang) — “Lesser Shang”

Location. At the outer corner of the thumbnail, about 2–3 mm from the nail edge.

Technique. Strong, brief thumbnail pressure for 30–60 seconds per thumb.

Why. A strong Heat-clearing point used for high fever with a sore throat — the classic feverish-cold combination. Often bled in clinical practice; firm pressure is the home version.

A practical routine

  1. Rest and take plenty of cool fluids
  2. Apply a cool (not cold) compress over GV 14 at the base of the neck
  3. Press LI 11 on both elbows for 1–2 minutes
  4. Press LI 4 on both hands for 1–2 minutes
  5. For fever with a sore throat, add LU 11
  6. Repeat every few hours alongside normal fever care

Self-care

  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Rest — the fever is doing important immune work
  • Keep cool but not cold; avoid shivering, which raises temperature
  • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed if the fever is uncomfortable
  • Light, easily digested food; warm broths and congee in the TCM tradition

Red flags — seek medical care urgently

  1. A baby under 3 months with any fever, or under 6 months with a high fever
  2. Fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, or a rash that does not fade under pressure (possible meningitis — call 999)
  3. Fever with difficulty breathing, confusion or drowsiness
  4. A very high fever (above 39.5°C) that will not come down
  5. A fever lasting more than 3 days, or recurring
  6. Fever with severe abdominal pain, or pain or burning passing urine
  7. Fever after recent travel to a malaria region
