BL 1 — Jīng Míng (睛明) — Bright Eyes
On this page
1. Overview
BL 1 — Jīng Míng (睛明) — is an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian. Its English name, Bright Eyes, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience, practising at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
In the depression slightly above the inner canthus of the eye, 0.1 cun superior to the medial canthus.
3. Actions
- Most important point for all eye disorders
- Expels Wind and clears Heat from the eyes
- Brightens vision
- Meeting point of all six Yang meridians at the eye
4. Indications
- All eye conditions — redness, pain, dryness, blurred vision, night blindness
- Myopia and visual deterioration
- Conjunctivitis and blepharitis
- Glaucoma (adjunct)
- Tinnitus via the Bladder channel
5. Needling
Close eyes, push eyeball gently laterally, insert perpendicularly 0.3–0.5 cun slowly along the orbital wall. Do not manipulate the needle. Apply firm pressure for 2–3 minutes on withdrawal to prevent haematoma.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
BL 1 is the origin point of the Bladder meridian and the most important local point for all eye disorders. It meets all six Yang meridians plus the Yin Qiao and Yang Qiao Mai. Needling requires great care — haematoma (black eye) is a real risk if the needle is manipulated or withdrawn without sustained pressure. Should only be performed by fully trained practitioners.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use BL 1 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Tinnitus, Headaches. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
