1. Overview
BL 49 — Yì Shè (意舍) — is an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian. Its English name, Abode of Thought, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.

2. Location
3 cun lateral to GV-6 Jizhong, at the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra.

4. Indications
- Distention and fullness of the abdomen
- Distention and pain of the chest and lateral costal regions
- Slippery diarrhea
- Difficult ingestion
- Vomiting
- Reddish-yellow urine
- Heat in the body with yellow face and eyes
- Jaundice
- Epigastric and abdominal pain and distention
5. Needling
Oblique insertion, 0.3 to 0.5 cun. Caution: Deep perpendicular or oblique needling in a medial direction carries a substantial risk of causing a pneumothorax.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.
