1. Overview

BL 49 — Yì Shè (意舍) — is an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian. Its English name, Abode of Thought, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use BL 49 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

3 cun lateral to GV-6 Jizhong, at the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra.

4. Indications

Distention and fullness of the abdomen
Distention and pain of the chest and lateral costal regions
Slippery diarrhea
Difficult ingestion
Vomiting
Reddish-yellow urine
Heat in the body with yellow face and eyes
Jaundice
Epigastric and abdominal pain and distention

5. Needling

Oblique insertion, 0.3 to 0.5 cun. Caution: Deep perpendicular or oblique needling in a medial direction carries a substantial risk of causing a pneumothorax.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.

6. Clinical notes

BL 49 Yì Shè (Abode of Thought) is used as part of channel-balancing prescriptions tailored to the patient’s individual TCM diagnosis.
