1. Overview
BL 52 — Zhì Shì (志室) — is an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian. Its English name, Will's Chamber, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I practise at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
3 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of L2 (level with BL 23).
3. Actions
- Tonifies Kidney Essence and strengthens the Will (Zhi)
- Supports BL 23 in tonifying the Kidney
- Strengthens the lower back
4. Indications
- Kidney Jing deficiency — premature ageing and constitutional weakness
- Lower back pain and weakness
- Impotence, spermatorrhoea and infertility
- Urinary difficulty
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.8–1.2 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
BL 52 stores the Kidney's spiritual aspect — the Will (Zhi) — and is used specifically for Kidney Jing and Essence deficiency. Located 3 cun lateral to the spine at L2, directly lateral to BL 23. Combined with BL 23 and GV 4 it completes the Kidney tonification back prescription, used routinely in fertility treatment for low AMH and poor egg or sperm quality.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use BL 52 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Fertility, Low AMH level, Male infertility. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
