BL 55 — Hé Yáng (合阳) — Confluence of Yang

1. Overview

BL 55Hé Yáng (合阳) — is an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian. Its English name, Confluence of Yang, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use BL 55 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

2 cun directly below BL-40 Weizhong, between the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle, on the line joining BL-40 Weizhong and BL-57 Chengshan. Note: first locate BL-57 Chengshan, then locate BL-55 Heyang at one fourth the distance between BL-40 Weizhong and BL-57 Chengshan.

3. Actions

4. Indications

  1. Low back pain
  2. Pain and paralysis of the lower extremities
  3. Heaviness and muscular spasms in the knee and calf
  4. Heat sensation of the inner thigh
  5. Difficulty walking
  6. Genital pain
  7. Rheumatism
  8. Pain in the loins and abdomen
  9. Menorrhagia

5. Needling

Puncture perpendicularly 0.7 to 1 cun.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.

6. Clinical notes

BL 55 Hé Yáng (Confluence of Yang) is used as part of channel-balancing prescriptions tailored to the patient’s individual TCM diagnosis.
