1. Overview

CV 23Lián Quán (廉泉) — is an acupuncture point on the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) meridian. Its English name, Ridge Spring, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

2. Location

Above the Adam's apple, in the depression above the hyoid bone on the anterior midline.

3. Actions

  1. Benefits the tongue and promotes speech

4. Indications

  1. Post-stroke aphasia and speech difficulty
  2. Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  3. Tongue swelling and stiffness
  4. Excessive salivation or dry mouth
  5. Sore throat and pharyngitis

5. Needling

Oblique superior insertion 0.5–0.8 cun directed towards the root of the tongue.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.

6. Clinical notes

CV 23 is the meeting point of the Ren Mai with the Yin Wei Mai at the throat. It is the primary point for speech disorders — post-stroke aphasia, stuttering and dysarthria — and for swallowing difficulties. Combined with GV 15 and HT 5 it forms the key prescription for post-stroke loss of speech.
