GB 29 — Jū Liáo (居髎) — Squatting Bone Hole
On this page
1. Overview
GB 29 — Jū Liáo (居髎) — is an acupuncture point on the Gallbladder meridian. Its English name, Squatting Bone Hole, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I practise at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
Midway between the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and the greater trochanter.
3. Actions
- Activates the meridian and relieves hip and lateral thigh pain
- Dispels Wind-Cold-Damp from the hip
- Benefits the hip joint
4. Indications
- Hip pain — important anterior local point alongside GB 30
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (bursitis)
- Lateral thigh and IT band pain
- Sciatica via the Gallbladder channel
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 1.5–2.0 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
GB 29 is used alongside GB 30 as a local prescription for hip pain. While GB 30 is deeper and targets the hip joint directly, GB 29 addresses the anterior hip, tensor fasciae latae and IT band — making it particularly useful for anterior hip pain and IT band syndrome.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use GB 29 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Hip pain, Sciatica. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
