1. Overview

GB 34Yáng Líng Quán (阳陵泉) — is an acupuncture point on the Gallbladder meridian. Its English name, Yang Mound Spring, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is one of the most clinically important points in acupuncture practice and is used regularly in the treatment of a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use GB 34 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

In the depression anterior and inferior to the head of the fibula.

3. Actions

  1. Spreads Liver Qi and clears Gallbladder Heat
  2. Relaxes the sinews and tendons — the Influential point for all sinews and tendons
  3. Activates the meridian and relieves pain in the lower limb and hip
  4. Clears Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gallbladder

4. Indications

  1. Tendon and sinew disorders anywhere in the body — the primary point for all tendinopathy
  2. Hip pain and sciatica
  3. Knee pain — particularly lateral knee pain and IT band syndrome
  4. Ankle sprains and lateral ankle pain
  5. Lateral rib and hypochondriac pain from Liver Qi stagnation
  6. Bitter taste, nausea and jaundice from Gallbladder Damp-Heat
  7. Spasm and contracture of the limbs

5. Needling

Perpendicular insertion 1.0–1.5 cun.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.

6. Clinical notes

GB 34 is the He-Sea and Earth point of the Gallbladder meridian and, most significantly, the Influential (Hui) point for all sinews and tendons. This makes it an indispensable point for any tendinopathy, ligament injury or musculoskeletal condition involving the tendons — from tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis to frozen shoulder and rotator cuff tendinopathy. Combined with GB 30 and BL 40 it is central to the sciatica prescription. Its role in clearing Liver-Gallbladder Damp-Heat makes it important for digestive and gynaecological conditions with this pattern.

7. Treatment at my clinic

I use GB 34 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Sciatica, Hip pain, Knee pain, Tennis elbow, Plantar fasciitis. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
