LI 2 — Èr Jiān (二间) — Second Space

1. Overview
LI 2 — Èr Jiān (二间) — is an acupuncture point on the Large Intestine meridian. Its English name, Second Space, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

2. Location
On the radial side of the index finger, in the depression distal to the 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint, at the junction of the red and white skin.
3. Actions
- Ying-Spring point of the Large Intestine — clears Heat
- Clears Heat from the face, nose and throat
- Relieves pain from Heat in the Large Intestine channel
4. Indications
- Toothache and dental pain from Large Intestine Heat
- Sore throat and tonsillitis from Wind-Heat
- Nosebleed (epistaxis)
- Fever and facial swelling
- Eye redness from Heat
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.2–0.3 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
LI 2 is the Ying-Spring and Water point of the Large Intestine. Ying-Spring points clear Heat from the channel, making LI 2 a useful supplementary point when Heat in the Large Intestine channel is causing pain in the teeth, throat or face. Used alongside LI 4, LI 11 and ST 44 for facial Heat conditions.
