1. Overview
LU 1 — Zhōng Fǔ (中府) — is an acupuncture point on the Lung meridian. Its English name, Central Treasury, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I practise at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
1st intercostal space, 6 cun lateral to the anterior midline on the anterior chest wall.
3. Actions
- Front-Mu point of the Lung — tonifies and regulates Lung Qi directly
- Descends Lung Qi and stops cough and wheezing
- Resolves Phlegm and clears Lung Heat
- Benefits the shoulder — important local point
4. Indications
- Chronic cough, asthma and shortness of breath
- Chest pain and tightness
- Shoulder pain
- Oedema from Lung failing to regulate water passages
5. Needling
Oblique lateral insertion 0.5–0.8 cun. Never needle medially — pneumothorax risk.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
LU 1 is the Front-Mu (Alarm) point of the Lung and the point where Lung Qi gathers at the surface. Combined with BL 13 (Back-Shu of the Lung) it forms the Front-Mu / Back-Shu pair for direct Lung tonification. Needling must always be lateral or transverse — medial insertion risks pneumothorax.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use LU 1 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Allergies, Shoulder pain. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
