1. Overview

LV 8Qū Quán (曲泉) — is an acupuncture point on the Liver meridian. Its English name, Spring at the Bend, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is one of the most clinically important points in acupuncture practice and is used regularly in the treatment of a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use LV 8 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

At the medial end of the popliteal crease, in the depression anterior to the tendons of semitendinosus and semimembranosus, posterior to the medial condyle of the femur.

3. Actions

  1. Nourishes Liver Blood and Yin
  2. Clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Jiao
  3. Benefits the Liver and regulates the uterus
  4. Activates the meridian and relieves knee pain

4. Indications

  1. Liver Blood and Yin deficiency — the most important tonifying point on the Liver meridian
  2. Irregular menstruation, amenorrhoea and infertility from Liver Blood deficiency
  3. Vaginal dryness and prolapse
  4. Medial knee pain from Liver meridian obstruction
  5. Urinary problems and leucorrhoea from Damp-Heat
  6. Impotence from Liver Damp-Heat

5. Needling

Perpendicular insertion 1.0–1.5 cun.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.

6. Clinical notes

LV 8 is the He-Sea and Water point of the Liver meridian and the primary tonifying point of the Liver — nourishing Liver Blood and Yin rather than moving Liver Qi. This makes it particularly valuable in fertility practice for conditions of Liver Blood deficiency including amenorrhoea, scanty periods, thin endometrium and poor egg quality. As a local point for medial knee pain, it addresses the Liver meridian pathway through the medial aspect of the knee.

7. Treatment at my clinic

I use LV 8 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Thin endometrial lining, Irregular menstrual cycle, Knee pain, Fertility. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
