Sān Jiǎo Jiǔ (三角灸) — Triangle Moxa
On this page
1. Overview
Sān Jiǎo Jiǔ (三角灸) — Triangle Moxa — is an extra acupuncture point (not on any of the fourteen main channels). It is used as an adjunct to channel-based prescriptions in acupuncture practice for the indications below.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use this point as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
Three points forming an equilateral triangle: apex at the umbilicus, two base points level with the umbilicus. The side length equals the width of the patient’s own mouth.
3. Actions
- Warms the abdomen
- Regulates the Uterus
- Dispels Cold
4. Indications
- Cold-type infertility and menstrual disorders
- Cold hernia
- Chronic abdominal cold and pain
- Post-partum weakness
5. Needling
Moxibustion technique only — 5–15 cones per point. Not needled.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.
6. Clinical notes
A classical moxibustion pattern for constitutional cold in the lower burner. Rarely used in mainstream modern practice but retained for Cold-pattern infertility and chronic cold hernia.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use Sān Jiǎo Jiǔ as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Fertility support. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
