1. Overview

SP 1 — Yǐn Bái (隐白) — is an acupuncture point on the Spleen meridian. Its English name, Hidden White, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

2. Location

On the medial side of the big toe, 0.1 cun posterior to the corner of the nail.

3. Actions

1. Well point of the Spleen — stops bleeding by tonifying Spleen Qi to hold Blood
2. Calms the Mind and stops nightmares
3. Regulates menstruation and stops excessive uterine bleeding
4. Warms and tonifies the Spleen

4. Indications

1. Uterine bleeding and menorrhagia — the primary point for Spleen failing to hold Blood
2. Heavy periods from Spleen Qi deficiency
3. Nightmares and disturbed sleep from Spleen deficiency
4. Abdominal distension and digestive weakness
5. Nosebleed from Spleen failing to hold Blood in the vessels

5. Needling

Shallow insertion 0.1 cun. Moxibustion is the most common treatment — used with moxa cone or moxa stick.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.

6. Clinical notes

SP 1 is the Well (Jing) and Wood point of the Spleen meridian. It is primarily used with moxibustion, not needling, to warm and tonify Spleen Qi and restore its function of holding Blood in the vessels. Moxibustion at SP 1 is the classical treatment for uterine bleeding from Spleen deficiency — seven moxa cones at SP 1 is a famous classical formula. Combined with CV 4 and SP 6 for heavy periods.
