1. Overview

ST 26Wài Líng (外陵) — is an acupuncture point on the Stomach meridian. Its English name, Outer Mound, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use ST 26 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

On the lower abdomen, 1 cun below the umbilicus and 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline.

3. Actions

  1. Regulates Qi in the lower jiao
  2. Alleviates pain

4. Indications

  1. Lower abdominal pain
  2. Dysmenorrhoea
  3. Hernia
  4. Intestinal spasm
  5. Umbilical pain
  6. Irregular menstruation

5. Needling

Perpendicular 0.5 to 1 cun.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.

6. Clinical notes

ST 26 is a local point for the lower abdomen. Often combined with SP 6 Sanyinjiao and REN 6 Qihai for dysmenorrhoea.
