ST 30 — Qì Chōng (气冲) — Surging Qi
On this page
1. Overview
ST 30 — Qì Chōng (气冲) — is an acupuncture point on the Stomach meridian. Its English name, Surging Qi, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience, practising at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
5 cun below the umbilicus, 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline (2 cun lateral to CV 2), at the inguinal region.
3. Actions
- Meeting point of the Stomach meridian with the Chong Mai (Sea of Blood)
- Regulates Qi and Blood in the lower Jiao
- Warms the uterus and benefits fertility
- Treats inguinal and genital disorders
4. Indications
- Infertility from Chong Mai deficiency — a key fertility point
- Irregular menstruation and dysmenorrhoea
- Inguinal hernia and groin pain
- Impotence and genital disorders in men
- Abdominal pain from Qi and Blood stagnation
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.8–1.0 cun. Avoid the femoral artery. Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
ST 30 is the meeting point of the Stomach meridian with the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel / Sea of Blood). This intersection gives it direct access to the Chong Mai, which governs menstruation, fertility and the uterus. Combined with CV 4, SP 6 and ST 29 it forms a comprehensive lower abdominal fertility prescription. Its proximity to the femoral artery requires careful needling technique.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use ST 30 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Fertility, Irregular menstrual cycle, Male infertility. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
