Acupuncture for Low hCG Levels in Early Pregnancy
By Dr (TCM) Attilio D'Alberto | Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Wokingham
Low or slowly rising hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) in early pregnancy is one of the most anxiety-provoking situations a woman trying to conceive can face. hCG is produced by the trophoblast cells of the developing embryo after implantation and should roughly double every 48–72 hours in a healthy early pregnancy. Levels that fail to rise appropriately suggest threatened miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy — both of which require urgent medical assessment.
Important Caveat
If you have low or slowly rising hCG, the immediate priority is urgent assessment by your GP or early pregnancy unit to exclude ectopic pregnancy. Do not delay seeking medical assessment — this is a potential emergency.
TCM Support for Early Pregnancy
Once ectopic pregnancy has been excluded and a viable intrauterine pregnancy confirmed, traditional Chinese medicine can support the pregnancy through its most vulnerable early weeks. In TCM, the ability to sustain an early pregnancy depends on the strength of kidney yang — the warming energy that holds and nourishes the implanted embryo. Low hCG and threatened miscarriage reflect kidney yang deficiency, kidney jing deficiency, or blood deficiency — insufficient foundational support for the developing embryo.
Treatment
Acupuncture in the luteal phase and early first trimester supports progesterone production, improves uterine blood flow, and activates the kidney yang energy that sustains the pregnancy. Chinese herbal medicine uses the classical foetus-stabilising formula Shou Tai Wan (modified to the individual pattern) — combining kidney yang tonics with foetus-calming herbs including Tu Si Zi, Sang Ji Sheng, Xu Duan, and Du Zhong. I prescribe pregnancy-safe formulas only, using pharmaceutical-grade granules from Sun Ten in Taiwan.
