Overview
Qi Ju Di Huang Wan is a modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan with the addition of two herbs — Gou Qi Zi (Lycium/wolfberry) and Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum) — that specifically nourish the Liver, brighten the eyes and gently pacify Liver Yang. This makes it the primary formula for eye conditions and visual disturbance arising from Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency with rising Liver Yang or Empty Heat.
TCM pattern
Prescribed for Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency with Liver Yang rising or Empty Heat disturbing the upper body, characterised by: dry, tired or painful eyes, blurred vision, photophobia, dizziness, tinnitus, headaches at the vertex or temples, irritability, dry mouth and throat, and a thin, wiry or rapid pulse.
Key herbs
All six herbs of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan plus:
- Gou Qi Zi (Lycium barbarum fruit/wolfberry) — nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin and Essence; the most important herb in TCM for nourishing the eyes
- Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum morifolium flower) — clears Liver Heat, subdues Liver Yang and brightens the eyes
