1. Overview

Yu Dai Wan — "Cure Discharge Pill" — is a classical Chinese formula for Damp-Heat leukorrhoea (vaginal discharge). It clears Damp-Heat from the lower burner, cools Blood, and resolves the toxin underlying chronic yellow, red or foul-smelling vaginal discharge. It is one of the principal gynaecological formulas for chronic cervicitis, persistent vaginal discharge after bacterial vaginosis, and Damp-Heat patterns of vulvovaginitis.

2. Composition

HerbRole
Chun Pi (Ailanthus root bark)Chief — clears Damp-Heat, astringes discharge
Bai ShaoDeputy — nourishes Blood, softens Liver
Dang GuiDeputy — nourishes and invigorates Blood
Huang BaiAssistant — clears Damp-Heat in the lower burner
Gao Liang JiangAssistant — warms middle, prevents the Cold herbs harming the Stomach

3. Indications

  • Chronic yellow vaginal discharge with Damp-Heat
  • Red-tinged or blood-streaked discharge (where investigation has excluded malignancy)
  • Foul-smelling discharge with itching
  • Chronic cervicitis with persistent discharge
  • Bacterial vaginosis with chronic Damp-Heat presentation
  • Damp-Heat trichomoniasis (alongside conventional treatment)

4. How it works

The chief herb Chun Pi has a unique action of astringing the Dai mai (Belt vessel) while clearing Damp-Heat — the precise mechanism needed for Damp-Heat leukorrhoea. Huang Bai reinforces the Damp-Heat-clearing action in the lower burner. Bai Shao and Dang Gui nourish Blood — chronic discharge depletes Blood and Yin. Gao Liang Jiang protects the middle from the cold-bitter herbs.

5. Modern applications

Modern Chinese gynaecology clinics use Yu Dai Wan for chronic cervicitis, post-treatment lingering vaginal discharge, and Damp-Heat patterns where conventional swab cultures are negative but symptoms persist. Always alongside, never instead of, appropriate conventional investigation including STI screening and cervical cancer screening.

6. Cautions

Damp-Heat pattern only — do not use for cold-Damp white discharge (use Wan Dai Tang instead). Always investigate red, blood-tinged or post-menopausal vaginal bleeding with conventional medicine first. Caution in pregnancy. Must be prescribed by a qualified Chinese herbalist.

7. Treatment at my clinic

I prescribe Yu Dai Wan as granules for chronic Damp-Heat vaginal discharge that has been investigated by GP and gynaecology and where TCM pattern matches. Online Chinese herbal consultations are available. See prices for costs.
