Bài Jiàng Cǎo (败酱草) — Patrinia scabiosaefolia / villosa — is known in English as Patrinia herb / Dahurian patrinia. 5. Modern research

Patrinia scabiosaefolia (Bai Jiang Cao) is the primary Chinese herb for pelvic and lower abdominal infection with concurrent Blood stasis — a pattern extremely common in endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Key bioactive constituents include patrinoside, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, flavonoids and iridoid glycosides. Research confirms significant anti-inflammatory effects (inhibiting PGE2 and TNF-alpha), antibacterial activity against common PID pathogens, analgesic properties, anti-tumour activity in ovarian cancer cell lines, and sedative effects relevant to its insomnia indication. Clinical research in China confirms Bai Jiang Cao-based formulas for PID and endometriosis are superior to antibiotics alone for the Blood stasis component of these conditions.

6. Cautions and contraindications

Avoid in Cold and deficiency patterns. Use with caution during pregnancy due to Blood-moving properties. May cause mild digestive discomfort — take after food.
