Chuān Xīn Lián (穿心莲) — Andrographis
By Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto — registered Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner (BAcC, RCHM) with over 25 years’ clinical experience.
Chuan Xin Lian — the herb Andrographis paniculata, sometimes called green chiretta — is one of the most intensely bitter, cooling herbs in the Chinese materia medica, reached for at the first scratch of a hot sore throat. It is used within Chinese herbal medicine for Heat-and-toxin patterns, and has become popular internationally as a cold-season herb. It is a complementary therapy, not a substitute for medical care.

1. What it is
Chuan Xin Lian is the dried aerial part of Andrographis paniculata, a bitter herb of the acanthus family grown across South and East Asia. In Chinese medicine it belongs to the herbs that clear Heat and relieve toxicity. Internationally it is one of the best-known herbs for the early sore throat and cold, sold as andrographis or green chiretta.
2. What it is used for
In Chinese herbal practice it is used, within a formula matched to the pattern, for:
- Acute hot, red, sore throat and mouth ulcers
- The early stage of a common cold with Heat signs — sore throat, fever, thirst
- Cough with thick yellow phlegm (Lung Heat)
- Damp-Heat patterns such as hot, painful urination and some skin infections
3. TCM properties
- Nature: Cold
- Flavour: Bitter (markedly)
- Channels: Lung, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine
- Actions: Clears Heat, relieves Fire toxicity, dries Damp, cools the Blood
4. Safety and cautions
- Cold and bitter — not suitable for cold, weak, Spleen-deficient digestion; it can cause loss of appetite, nausea or loose stools, especially in prolonged or high-dose use.
- Pregnancy: avoid — it has traditional and pharmacological cautions in pregnancy.
- Short courses: being very cold, it is used for acute episodes rather than taken continuously.
- Medication: may interact with anticoagulants, blood-pressure and immune-modulating drugs — tell your prescriber. Always have Chinese herbal medicine prescribed by a herbalist registered with the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM).
5. When to see a practitioner instead
A patent remedy is a fixed formula for a passing complaint. Recurrent or persistent symptoms point to an underlying pattern that a one-size-fits-all pill will not resolve — for those, an individualised assessment and a tailored prescription address the root. See Chinese herbal medicine or arrange an online herbal consultation.
6. Frequently asked questions
What is Chuan Xin Lian (andrographis) used for?
In Chinese medicine it is used for Heat-and-toxin patterns — a hot red sore throat, the early Heat-type common cold, cough with thick yellow phlegm, and some Damp-Heat urinary and skin problems. It is prescribed within a balanced formula, not taken alone long term.
Does andrographis help with colds?
It is one of the most-used herbs for the early hot sore throat and cold in both Chinese and international herbal practice. It is used as a complementary measure at the first signs, alongside rest and fluids, rather than as a cure — and persistent or severe illness needs medical assessment.
Is Chuan Xin Lian safe to take every day?
Not really — it is very cold and bitter, and prolonged or high-dose use can upset a weak digestion and cause nausea or loose stools. It is best used for short courses during acute episodes, prescribed by a qualified herbalist.
Can I take andrographis in pregnancy?
No — it is best avoided in pregnancy and while trying to conceive. Choose a gentler, pregnancy-safe approach and ask a practitioner.
