1. Overview

Huáng Lián (黄连) — Coptis chinensis — is known in English as Coptis rhizome / Goldthread. It belongs to the category of Herbs that clear Heat and dry Dampness in the Chinese Materia Medica and is one of the most important and widely prescribed herbs in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is used in Chinese herbal medicine both as a component of classical herbal formulas and as a significant individual herb in tailored prescriptions.

I prescribe Huáng Lián as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan — independently tested to the highest international quality and safety standards. Herbs are never prescribed individually outside a properly balanced formula; they are always combined with other herbs selected to match the patient’s individual TCM pattern. Online consultations are available for patients who cannot attend my clinic in person.

5. Modern research

Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian) is one of the most potent antimicrobial herbs in the Chinese Materia Medica. Its primary bioactive constituent is berberine, one of the most extensively studied natural compounds in modern pharmacology. Research confirms that berberine has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses and fungi; improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood glucose (comparable to metformin in some studies); reduces LDL cholesterol; has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects; improves PCOS hormonal profiles including reducing androgens and LH; and has anti-cancer properties. Clinical trials have confirmed berberine’s efficacy in type 2 diabetes, PCOS, dyslipidaemia and inflammatory bowel disease.

6. Cautions and contraindications

Contraindicated in Cold and deficiency patterns. Avoid prolonged use without tonifying herbs as the cold, bitter nature can damage the Spleen and Stomach. Not recommended during pregnancy. Berberine may interact with certain medications including cyclosporin; inform your prescribing doctor.

Important: Chinese herbs should always be prescribed by a fully qualified herbalist who is a member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM). Never self-prescribe or self-administer Chinese herbs without professional guidance. Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto is a member of the RCHM and the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience.
