Turkey Tail Mushroom (Yún Zhī, 云芝, Trametes versicolor)

Turkey Tail (Yun Zhi, Trametes versicolor) is one of the best-researched immune-modulating mushrooms in the world, valued in Chinese medicine for clearing Damp and Heat and strengthening the body. It contains the polysaccharopeptides PSP and PSK — compounds with well-documented effects on T-cell and natural killer (NK) cell activity, used as integrative oncology supplements in Asia for decades. It also supports the gut microbiome. In TCM it clears Damp-Heat from the lower burner and tonifies the Spleen.

1. Overview

Yún Zhī (云芝, “cloud mushroom”) — Trametes versicolor (formerly Coriolus versicolor) — is known in English as Turkey Tail. It belongs to the category of Herbs that clear Damp-Heat in the Chinese Materia Medica, traditionally used to clear Damp and Heat from the liver and lower burner and to strengthen the body in chronic illness.

It is used in Chinese herbal medicine mainly as a standardised PSP/PSK extract in modern integrative practice. I advise on Yún Zhī as part of bespoke supplement recommendations, particularly for immune support. Online consultations are available for patients who cannot attend my clinic in person.

4. Key formulas containing Yún Zhī

Yún Zhī is used in modern integrative practice as a standardised extract rather than as a classical formula ingredient. It is most often combined with Qi-tonifying and immune-supporting herbs in individually modified prescriptions.

See the full Chinese herbal medicine formula directory for detailed information on all classical formulas.

5. Modern research

Trametes versicolor is among the most clinically researched medicinal mushrooms, principally for its two protein-bound polysaccharides: polysaccharide-K (PSK, Krestin) and polysaccharide-peptide (PSP).

Immune modulation and oncology: PSK is an approved adjuvant cancer therapy in Japan, where it has been used alongside surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for gastric, colorectal and lung cancer. Meta-analyses report improved survival and immune parameters when PSK is added to standard treatment for certain cancers. PSP enhances T-cell proliferation and NK cell activity.

Gut microbiome: A human study found that Turkey Tail acted as a prebiotic, beneficially shifting the gut bacterial population — relevant to both immune function and the TCM action of clearing Damp from the lower burner.

Antioxidant and antiviral: Turkey Tail polysaccharides show antioxidant and antiviral activity in laboratory studies, supporting its traditional use in strengthening resistance to chronic infection.

6. Incompatibilities

Turkey Tail (Yún Zhī, 云芝, Trametes versicolor) is not listed in either of the two classical incompatibility texts — Shi Ba Fan (Eighteen Antagonisms) or Shi Jiu Wei (Nineteen Mutual Inhibitions). As with every Chinese herb it should be prescribed only as part of a balanced formula by a registered Chinese herbalist (RCHM), who will check for interactions with any other herbs and prescription medications you are taking.

7. Cautions and contraindications

Generally very safe and well-tolerated. Mild digestive upset or darkening of the stool can occur. Use cautiously in Spleen Yang deficiency with cold, loose stools, as the slightly cool nature may aggravate this pattern.

Pattern contraindications

Differentiate the pattern carefully before prescribing — matching the formula to the underlying pattern is essential. The practitioner will check pulse, tongue and full case history at every consultation.

Modern drug interactions

Immunomodulatory activity means caution is warranted with immunosuppressant medication — tell your GP if you take ciclosporin, tacrolimus, methotrexate or biologics, or are on chemotherapy, so any interaction can be reviewed.

Important: Chinese herbs should always be prescribed by a fully qualified herbalist who is a member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM). Never self-prescribe or self-administer Chinese herbs without professional guidance. Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto is a member of the RCHM and the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience.

8. Treatment at my clinic

I recommend Yún Zhī as part of tailored advice for a range of conditions including low immune resistance, chronic infection, gut dysbiosis and integrative cancer support. Every recommendation is made following a full TCM assessment and adjusted throughout treatment as the pattern responds.
