CV 14 — Jù Quē (巨阙) — Great Deficiency
On this page
1. Overview
CV 14 — Jù Quē (巨阙) — is an acupuncture point on the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) meridian. Its English name, Great Deficiency, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I practise at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
On the anterior midline, 6 cun above the umbilicus (2 cun below the sternocostal angle).
3. Actions
- Front-Mu point of the Heart — directly regulates the Heart
- Calms the Mind and resolves Phlegm-Fire
- Descends rebellious Qi
4. Indications
- Palpitations and mania from Heart Fire or Phlegm-Fire
- Insomnia from Heart Heat
- Chest pain and fullness
- Hiccup and epigastric pain
5. Needling
Oblique inferior insertion 0.5–1.0 cun. Do not needle perpendicularly — liver lies below.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
CV 14 is the Front-Mu point of the Heart. Combined with BL 15 (Back-Shu of the Heart) it forms the Front-Mu / Back-Shu pair for direct Heart organ treatment. It is used for excess Heart patterns — Fire and Phlegm-Fire — where BL 15 + HT 7 would be used for deficiency patterns.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use CV 14 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Anxiety, Insomnia, High blood pressure. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
