1. Overview
Dannang — Dǎn Náng (胆囊) — is an acupuncture point on the Extra point (lateral lower leg) meridian. Its English name, Gallbladder Point, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience, practising at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
2 cun directly below GB 34 (Yanglingquan).
3. Actions
- Clears Damp-Heat from the Gallbladder — the specific extra point for gallbladder disorders
- Relieves biliary pain and gallstone colic
- Regulates the Gallbladder and relieves hypochondriac pain
4. Indications
- Acute cholecystitis and gallbladder pain
- Gallstones and biliary colic
- Hypochondriac pain from Gallbladder Damp-Heat
- Bitter taste, nausea and jaundice
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 1.0–1.5 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
Dannang is an extra point specifically used for acute gallbladder conditions. Located 2 cun below GB 34, it is identified by palpation — it is markedly tender in patients with active gallbladder pathology. It is the most diagnostically sensitive point for gallbladder disease and produces the strongest anti-spasmodic effect on the biliary tract when needled with strong stimulation.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use Dannang as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Digestive disorders. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
