1. Overview

HedingHè Dǐng (鹤顶) — is an acupuncture point on the Extra point (superior knee) meridian. Its English name, Crane's Summit, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience, practising at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

In the depression at the midpoint of the superior border of the patella.

3. Actions

  1. Activates the meridian and relieves superior patellar pain
  2. Dispels Wind-Damp from the knee
  3. Strengthens the knee joint

4. Indications

  1. Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee) — superior pole of the patella
  2. Patellofemoral pain syndrome
  3. Knee osteoarthritis — anterior aspect
  4. Weakness and atrophy of the quadriceps
  5. Paralysis of the leg

5. Needling

Perpendicular insertion 0.5–0.8 cun.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.

6. Clinical notes

Heding targets the superior aspect of the patella and the distal quadriceps tendon, making it specific for patellar tendinopathy and patellofemoral conditions affecting the superior patellar pole. Combined with the Xiyan points, ST 34 and ST 36 it completes the local patellar prescription for anterior knee pain.

7. Treatment at my clinic

I use Heding as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Knee pain. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
