HT 9 — Shào Chōng (少冲) — Lesser Rushing

1. Overview

HT 9Shào Chōng (少冲) — is an acupuncture point on the Heart meridian. Its English name, Lesser Rushing, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

2. Location

On the radial side of the little finger, 0.1 cun posterior to the corner of the nail.

3. Actions

  1. Well point of the Heart — restores consciousness and clears extreme Heat
  2. Revives the Mind from collapse
  3. Clears Heat from the Heart channel

4. Indications

  1. Loss of consciousness from Heart Fire or extreme Heat — emergency point
  2. Cardiac pain and palpitations
  3. Mania and agitation from Heat
  4. Febrile disease with delirium
  5. Chest pain

5. Needling

Shallow insertion 0.1 cun, or prick to bleed.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.

6. Clinical notes

HT 9 is the Well (Jing) and Wood point of the Heart meridian. Well points are used for emergency resuscitation and clearing acute Heat. Pricking HT 9 to bleed is used in acute cardiac emergencies and loss of consciousness from Heat in classical practice. Combined with PC 9, GV 26 and GV 25 for emergency resuscitation.
