1. Overview
LI 19 — Kǒu Hé Liáo (口禾髎) — is an acupuncture point on the Large Intestine meridian. Its English name, Grain Bone-Hole, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use LI 19 as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
On the face, level with the lower border of the nostril, 0.5 cun lateral to the philtrum (midpoint below the nostril).
3. Actions
- Opens and benefits the nose
- Frees the channel and alleviates facial paralysis
4. Indications
- Rhinitis and nasal obstruction
- Nosebleeds
- Stiffness and swelling of the lips
- Facial paralysis
- Loss of sense of smell
- Yawning excessively
5. Needling
Perpendicular or slightly oblique 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.
6. Clinical notes
LI 19 is used in local point prescriptions for the nose and face. Combined with LI 20 Yingxiang and LI 4 Hegu for nasal congestion and rhinitis.
