LU 6 — Kǒng Zuì (孔最) — Greatest Hole
On this page
1. Overview
LU 6 — Kǒng Zuì (孔最) — is an acupuncture point on the Lung meridian. Its English name, Greatest Hole, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience, practising at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
On the palmar aspect of the forearm, 7 cun above LU 9, on the line connecting LU 5 and LU 9.
3. Actions
- Xi-Cleft point of the Lung — for acute Lung disorders and bleeding
- Clears Lung Heat and stops bleeding
- Descends Lung Qi and relieves acute cough and wheezing
- Activates the meridian and relieves elbow and forearm pain
4. Indications
- Acute asthma attack — the Xi-Cleft point is used for acute conditions
- Haemoptysis (coughing blood) from Lung Heat
- Acute sore throat and loss of voice
- Fever from Lung Heat — used in febrile disease
- Elbow and forearm pain along the Lung channel
5. Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.5–0.8 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
LU 6 is the Xi-Cleft point of the Lung meridian, the point where Qi and Blood accumulate deeply in the channel. Xi-Cleft points are used for acute and painful conditions of their organ. LU 6 is therefore the primary point for acute Lung emergencies — asthma attack, haemoptysis and acute febrile disease affecting the Lungs. Combined with PC 6 and CV 17 it is used for acute breathlessness.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use LU 6 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Allergies. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
