1. Overview

SI 19Tīng Gōng (听宫) — is an acupuncture point on the Small Intestine meridian. Its English name, Listening Palace, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I practise at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.

2. Location

Anterior to the tragus of the ear, in the depression formed when the mouth is slightly open.

3. Actions

  1. Primary local point for all ear disorders
  2. Calms the Mind
  3. Expels Wind from the ear region

4. Indications

  1. Tinnitus — the primary local point
  2. Deafness and sudden hearing loss
  3. Otitis media and ear pain
  4. TMJ pain — the point lies over the temporomandibular joint

5. Needling

Perpendicular insertion 0.5–1.0 cun with the mouth slightly open.

Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.

6. Clinical notes

SI 19 is the terminal point of the Small Intestine meridian, meeting with the Triple Burner and Gallbladder meridians at the ear. It is used in virtually every tinnitus and hearing treatment alongside TB 17 and GB 2. Its location directly over the TMJ also makes it a key point for jaw pain, combined with ST 6, ST 7 and GB 20.

7. Treatment at my clinic

I use SI 19 as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Tinnitus, Jaw pain and TMJ. Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
