1. Overview
SP 17 — Shí Dòu (食窦) — is an acupuncture point on the Spleen meridian. Its English name, Food Cavity, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used in acupuncture practice as part of channel-balancing prescriptions for a range of conditions.

2. Location
In the fifth intercostal space, 5 cun lateral to the midsternal line.
3. Actions
- Dissipates accumulation of food and Fluid
- Promotes digestion
4. Indications
- Fullness of the chest and lateral costal region
- Ceaseless pain of the lateral costal region
- Abdominal distention
- Water swelling of the abdomen
- Borborygmus
- Swelling of the breasts
- Jaundice
- Ascites
- Retention of urine
5. Needling
Transverse-oblique insertion along the intercostal space, 0.5 to 1 cun.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.
