On this page
1. Overview
Wèi Guǎn Xià Shù (胃管下俞) — Stomach Vessel Lower Shu — is an extra acupuncture point (not on any of the fourteen main channels). It is used as an adjunct to channel-based prescriptions in acupuncture practice for the indications below.
I am Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto, a member of the British Acupuncture Council with over 25 years of clinical experience. I use this point as part of individually tailored acupuncture prescriptions at my clinic in Wokingham, Berkshire.
2. Location
1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 8th thoracic vertebra (T8).
3. Actions
- Regulates the Middle Burner
- Nourishes Stomach Yin
4. Indications
- Diabetes (Xiao Ke) — classical primary indication
- Chest and hypochondriac pain
- Dry mouth and thirst
- Cough
5. Needling
Oblique inferomedially 0.5–0.8 cun. Do not needle perpendicularly — risk of pneumothorax.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. Never attempt self-needling. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of immediately after treatment in a clinical sharps container.
6. Clinical notes
The classical “diabetes point” of Chinese acupuncture, used in the Wei Bing tradition. Modern use as part of a wider Yin-nourishing prescription for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
7. Treatment at my clinic
I use Wèi Guǎn Xià Shù as part of tailored acupuncture prescriptions for conditions including Type 2 diabetes (blog). Each treatment is individually designed following a full TCM assessment.
