Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan (柄子养心丸) — Biota Seed Nourish the Heart Pill
By Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto — registered Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner (BAcC, RCHM) with over 25 years’ clinical experience.
Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan — “Biota Seed Nourish the Heart Pill” — is a gentle, nourishing Chinese patent remedy for the forgetful, anxious, poor-sleep picture of a Heart short of Blood. It calms the mind by nourishing rather than sedating. It is complementary self-care for mild sleep, memory and anxiety complaints, not a treatment for a diagnosed condition.

1. What it is
Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan is an over-the-counter formula that nourishes Heart Blood and Kidney Yin and calms the Shen (mind). It suits the “empty” anxious picture — tired, forgetful, unsettled and sleeping poorly — rather than a hot, agitated one.
2. What it is used for
Traditionally used for Heart Blood and Kidney deficiency failing to anchor the mind:
- Palpitations and a fluttering, anxious heart
- Light, unrefreshing sleep and vivid dreams
- Forgetfulness and poor concentration
- Restlessness, unease and being easily startled, with tiredness
3. Key ingredients
It centres on Bai Zi Ren (biota seed) with Blood-and-Yin nourishing herbs such as Dang Gui, Mai Men Dong, Gou Qi Zi and Sheng Di Huang, plus Shi Chang Pu and Fu Shen to open and settle the Heart. It contains no animal products.
4. Safety and cautions
- Not a substitute for treatment of diagnosed insomnia, anxiety or depression — keep any prescribed medication and speak to your doctor.
- Rich and moistening — may not suit a very weak, damp digestion with loose stools; take with food.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: only under professional advice.
- New, frequent palpitations, or those with chest pain or breathlessness, need medical assessment. Disclose sedatives and antidepressants to your prescriber. Always have Chinese herbal medicine prescribed by a herbalist registered with the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM).
5. When to see a practitioner instead
A patent remedy is a fixed formula for a passing complaint. Recurrent or persistent symptoms point to an underlying pattern that a one-size-fits-all pill will not resolve — for those, an individualised assessment and a tailored prescription address the root. See Chinese herbal medicine or arrange an online herbal consultation.
6. Frequently asked questions
What is Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan used for?
It is traditionally used for the anxious, forgetful, poor-sleep picture of Heart Blood and Kidney deficiency — palpitations, light dream-filled sleep, forgetfulness and restlessness with tiredness. It nourishes and calms rather than sedating, and is a complementary self-care remedy.
What is the difference between Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan and An Shen Bu Xin Wan?
Both calm the mind, but Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan leans more on nourishing Heart Blood and Kidney Yin for the tired, forgetful, 'empty' picture, while An Shen Bu Xin Wan is a little more settling for a restless, palpitating one. A practitioner matches the formula to your pattern.
How long does it take to help sleep?
As a nourishing tonic it works gradually over one to a few weeks rather than acting as a sedative on the first night. It is taken as a reviewed course. Persistent insomnia should be assessed properly.
Can I take it with my sleeping tablet or antidepressant?
Only with your doctor's knowledge. Calming herbal formulas can add to the effect of sedatives and other medication, so disclose everything you take and do not stop prescribed medicine.
