Overview

Huan Shao Dan — the “Return to Youth Pill” — is from Hong Zunzhi’s Song-dynasty Hong Shi Ji Yan Fang. It is a broad-spectrum Kidney-Spleen tonic, addressing the combined depletion that accompanies premature ageing: weakness, fatigue, weak knees and back, declining sexual function, memory and concentration decline, hair thinning, and loss of appetite from Spleen Qi weakness. The formula tonifies Kidney Yang and Essence, supports the Spleen and uses small aromatic warming herbs to open the digestive pathway so the nourishing herbs can be assimilated.

I prescribe Huan Shao Dan as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.

TCM pattern

Huan Shao Dan is prescribed for combined Kidney Yang and Spleen Qi deficiency with Essence depletion:

  • Fatigue, low energy and stamina
  • Weak, sore lumbar region and knees
  • Cold extremities
  • Memory decline, poor concentration
  • Low libido, erectile difficulty in men, low fertility in either sex
  • Premature greying or hair thinning
  • Poor appetite, loose stools
  • Frequent clear urination, nocturia
  • Tongue — pale, possibly with thin coat
  • Pulse — deep, weak, especially in chi position

Key herbs

  1. Shu Di Huang — tonifies Kidney Yin and Blood

  3. Shan Zhu Yu — tonifies and astringes the Kidney

Cautions

Not appropriate for Yin-deficient Heat, Liver Fire, or Damp-Heat patterns — the warming tonifying herbs aggravate Heat.

For longer-term use as part of constitutional treatment.

Memory or cognitive decline that progresses requires medical assessment to exclude dementia, vascular disease or other causes.
