What is Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang?

Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang — Inula and Hematite Decoction — is a classical Shang Han Lun formula by Zhang Zhongjing for rebellious Stomach Qi with Phlegm. In Chinese herbal medicine it is one of the most useful formulas for chronic hiccup, persistent belching, GERD and nausea that does not respond to milder Qi-moving formulas.

I prescribe Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.

Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang TCM pattern

Prescribed for rebellious Stomach Qi with Phlegm-Damp obstruction: persistent hiccup, belching, regurgitation, vomiting, epigastric fullness and pressure, nausea worse after meals, slimy white tongue coat and a wiry slippery pulse.

Key herbs

  1. Xuan Fu Hua (Inula flower) — descends rebellious Qi and transforms Phlegm
  2. Dai Zhe Shi (Hematite) — heavy mineral that strongly descends rebellious Qi
  3. Ban Xia — transforms Phlegm and descends Stomach Qi
  4. Ren Shen — tonifies Stomach Qi
  5. Sheng Jiang, Da Zao, Zhi Gan Cao — harmonise the middle

Formula actions

  1. Descends rebellious Stomach Qi
  2. Transforms Phlegm-Damp
  3. Tonifies Stomach Qi to prevent recurrence

Conditions treated

  1. Persistent intractable hiccup
  2. GERD and reflux with regurgitation and chest oppression
  3. Functional dyspepsia with chronic belching
  4. Hyperemesis gravidarum (under specialist supervision)
  5. Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (with anti-emetic support)

Cautions

Use cautiously in pregnancy — hematite is heavy and downbearing. Confirm pregnancy status before prescribing. Generally well tolerated; reduce dose as symptoms improve.
