Overview
Yu Lin Zhu — the “Jade Unicorn Pill” or “Pearl for Nurturing the Unicorn” — is one of the most famous and enduring fertility formulas in Chinese medicine. It is from Zhang Jingyue’s Jing Yue Quan Shu (1624) and was specifically designed to address the common pattern of female subfertility arising from combined Spleen Qi, Blood, and Kidney Yang and Essence deficiency.
The name reflects classical Chinese symbolism: the qilin (often translated “unicorn”) is a mythical auspicious creature whose appearance heralded the birth of a virtuous child — Confucius’s birth was traditionally heralded by a qilin. The formula was therefore named to evoke the conception of a longed-for, healthy child.
Yu Lin Zhu is essentially a combination of Ba Zhen Tang (which tonifies Qi and Blood) with additional Kidney Yang and Essence tonics. It is one of the few classical formulas in which all three of the major tonifying treatment principles — Qi, Blood and Kidney — are simultaneously addressed in significant proportion.
I prescribe Yu Lin Zhu as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan, tailored to the patient’s individual fertility pattern after a full TCM assessment.
TCM pattern
Yu Lin Zhu is prescribed for female subfertility from combined Spleen Qi, Blood, and Kidney Yang and Essence deficiency:
- Difficulty conceiving with no obvious structural cause
- Late, scanty, pale menstruation — long cycles (35–40+ days)
- Diminished ovarian reserve, low AMH
- Short luteal phase and thin endometrial lining
- Cold lower abdomen and cold extremities
- Sore and weak lower back and knees
- Fatigue, low libido, pale complexion
- Recurrent miscarriage from Kidney and Blood deficiency
- Postpartum delayed return of fertility after a previous birth
- Tongue — pale, possibly with teethmarks, thin white coat
- Pulse — thin, weak, deep, slow
Key herbs
- Ren Shen (or Dang Shen) — tonifies Spleen Qi and Yuan Qi
- Bai Zhu — tonifies Spleen Qi, dries Damp
- Fu Ling — tonifies Spleen, calms the Shen
- Zhi Gan Cao — harmonises
- Dang Gui — nourishes and moves Blood; the most important Blood-nourishing herb for women
- Chuan Xiong — moves Blood; supports menstrual circulation
- Bai Shao — nourishes Blood and softens the Liver
- Shu Di Huang — nourishes Kidney Yin and Essence
- Tu Si Zi — tonifies Kidney Yang and Essence; safeguards pregnancy
- Du Zhong — strengthens Kidney Yang and the lower back
- Lu Jiao Shuang (degelatinated deer antler) — powerfully tonifies Kidney Yang and Essence; promotes ovulation
- Chuan Jiao (Sichuan pepper) — warms the lower burner
Formula actions
- Tonifies Qi and Blood
- Warms and tonifies Kidney Yang
- Nourishes Kidney Yin and Essence
- Warms the uterus and lower burner
- Promotes conception
- Safeguards early pregnancy
Conditions treated
- Female subfertility from combined Qi, Blood and Kidney deficiency — see how to get pregnant
- Diminished ovarian reserve and low AMH — see low AMH level
- Premature ovarian insufficiency — see premature ovarian failure
- Recurrent early miscarriage — see miscarriage
- Late and scanty menstruation — see irregular cycles and light periods
- Postpartum delayed return of cycles and secondary infertility
- Thin endometrial lining in IVF cycles — supporting implantation
- Cold uterus pattern with cold lower abdomen and painful periods relieved by warmth
- Repeated IVF failure with Kidney and Blood deficiency — see repeated IVF failures
Comparisons with related formulas
- Ba Zhen Tang — the base formula; tonifies Qi and Blood but does not address Kidney directly. Yu Lin Zhu = Ba Zhen Tang + Kidney Yang and Essence tonics.
- You Gui Wan — for pronounced Kidney Yang deficiency without much Blood deficiency. Better when cold is severe and the digestion is strong.
- Zan Yu Dan — the male-fertility counterpart from the same author and source text.
- Wen Jing Tang — for Cold in the channels with Blood stasis; for women with cold uterus and old Blood stasis rather than pure deficiency.
- Zuo Gui Yin — for pure Kidney Yin deficiency without Yang or Blood deficiency.
Modifications
- For thin endometrial lining, add E Jiao replacement (we substitute with He Shou Wu and Bai Shao on welfare grounds — see clinic policy), Gou Qi Zi and Sha Shen
- For pronounced cold and painful periods, increase Rou Gui and Chuan Jiao; add Ai Ye
- For Liver Qi stagnation overlay (PMS, irritability), combine with Xiao Yao San principles
- For Blood stasis (clots, pain), add Tao Ren and Hong Hua
- For IVF support, time the formula to the follicular phase and adjust to the cycle stage
- For recurrent miscarriage, continue beyond conception (under supervision) with safeguarding herbs like Sang Ji Sheng
Cautions
Not appropriate during acute infection, fever or in damp-heat patterns. The rich tonifying herbs can entrench Damp or Heat.
Not appropriate for Yin-deficient Heat patterns with prominent hot flushes, night sweats, dry mouth and irritability — the warming Kidney Yang herbs will aggravate these.
The classical formula contains Lu Jiao Shuang (degelatinated deer antler). In our clinic, we use only Lu Jiao Shuang from harvested deer antler that meets welfare standards; we do not use any endangered or controlled animal products. Vegetarian patients can request herb substitutions.
This is a fertility formula and is best prescribed by a qualified practitioner who can monitor the cycle and adjust the formula to each phase. Self-prescribing is not advised.
