Overview

Zhi Zi Chi Tang — Gardenia and Prepared Soybean Decoction — is from Zhang Zhongjing’s Shang Han Lun. Just two herbs — Zhi Zi (Gardenia) and Dan Dou Chi (prepared soybean) — in elegant combination for lingering Heat in the chest after a febrile illness, producing restlessness, irritability and insomnia.

Zhang Zhongjing recognised this pattern as the residual phase of warm disease where the main pathogen has cleared but Heat lingers in the chest and disturbs the spirit. The formula gently disperses this Heat outward and upward.

I prescribe Zhi Zi Chi Tang as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.

TCM pattern

Zhi Zi Chi Tang is prescribed for lingering Heat in the chest with restlessness:

  • Vexation, restlessness, irritability
  • Insomnia — particularly difficulty falling asleep with restless turning
  • Chest oppression
  • Sense of inner heat or stuffiness in the chest
  • Mild low-grade afternoon fever
  • Slight bitter taste, dry mouth
  • Often follows a recent febrile illness or stress
  • Tongue — red, particularly at the tip; thin yellow coat
  • Pulse — rapid, slightly forceful

Key herbs

  1. Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit) — chief; clears Heat from the chest and Triple Burner; drains Heat through urine
  2. Dan Dou Chi (fermented soybean) — aromatic; mildly releases Heat outward and upward

Formula actions

  1. Clears Heat from the chest
  2. Disperses residual Heat outward
  3. Relieves restlessness and irritability
  4. Calms the Shen

Conditions treated

  1. Insomnia from Heat in the chest — particularly post-illness or post-stress — see insomnia
  2. Restlessness and anxiety with chest oppression — see anxiety
  3. Post-viral irritability and sleep disturbance
  4. Mild low-grade fever after illness
  5. Stress-driven sleep disturbance with feeling of inner heat
  6. Hot flushes in perimenopause with restlessness — see menopausal symptoms
  7. Heart palpitations from Heat in the chest

Cautions

Not appropriate for cold patterns or Spleen Qi deficiency.

Mild formula generally well-tolerated; use cautiously in pregnancy.

Persistent insomnia or anxiety needs broader assessment of TCM pattern.
