1. Overview

Zhī Zǐ (栀子) is the ripe dried fruit of Gardenia jasminoides, known in English as Gardenia fruit or Cape jasmine fruit. It belongs to the category of Herbs that drain Fire in the Chinese Materia Medica and is one of the most useful herbs in Chinese herbal medicine for clearing heat from the three Burners, eliminating constraint heat with irritability, and treating Damp-Heat in the Liver and Gallbladder.

I prescribe Zhī Zǐ as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan. Herbs are always combined with other herbs selected to match the patient’s individual TCM pattern. Online consultations are available for patients who cannot attend my clinic in person.

  3. Cools the Blood and stops bleeding from Heat
  4. Reduces swelling and resolves heat-toxin in the skin

  2. Damp-Heat jaundice with dark urine and a yellow tongue coat
  3. Damp-Heat urinary disorders with burning, urgency and concentrated urine

  5. Hot, red, painful skin lesions and traumatic injuries (topically)

4. Key formulas containing Zhī Zǐ

Zhī Zǐ appears in Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Prepared Soybean Decoction) for residual heat in the chest after febrile illness, Jia Wei Xiao Yao San for Liver Qi stagnation with Heat, Long Dan Xie Gan Tang for Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat, and many other Heat-clearing formulas.

5. Modern research

Gardenia fruit contains iridoid glycosides (notably geniposide and gardenoside), crocins (responsible for the yellow colour, related to those in saffron), and a range of monoterpenes. Pharmacological studies report hepatoprotective, choleretic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anxiolytic and sedative effects. Crocin has been investigated for neuroprotective and antidepressant activity, broadly consistent with the herb’s traditional use for irritability and constraint heat.

6. Cautions and contraindications

Use with caution in patients with cold-deficient diarrhoea or weak Spleen Qi, as the cold bitter nature can damage Spleen Yang. Avoid long-term high-dose use without supporting herbs.
