1. What is chlorella?
Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater green algae that contains the highest concentration of chlorophyll of any known plant. It is a complete protein source, providing all of the essential amino acids, along with B-complex vitamins (including a small amount of bioavailable B12), iron, magnesium, zinc and a unique substance called Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF). Chlorella is most renowned for its ability to bind heavy metals and other toxins and escort them out of the body.
Reference ranges and recommended intakes vary from country to country — always interpret guidance against the recommendations of your own healthcare authority.
2. Function and how it works
Chlorella supports fertility through:
- Heavy metal detoxification. Chlorella binds mercury, lead, cadmium and other heavy metals that can damage eggs and sperm and disrupt hormones.
- Complete protein and minerals. Chlorella provides bioavailable iron, magnesium and zinc — all essential for fertility.
- Antioxidant defence. Chlorophyll, beta-carotene, lutein and other carotenoids in chlorella protect reproductive cells from oxidative damage.
- Liver support. Chlorella supports phase 2 liver detoxification, helping the clearance of excess hormones and pollutants.
- Gut health. Chlorella supports beneficial gut flora and elimination, improving overall toxin clearance.
3. Fertility benefits
Chlorella is particularly relevant for:
- Couples with potential heavy metal exposure (older dental amalgams, occupational exposure, polluted environments, fish-heavy diets)
- Anyone undertaking a structured preconception detox
- Vegans and vegetarians needing additional iron, B12 and protein
- Couples preparing for IVF or natural conception
4. Recommended daily dose
I recommend a daily dose of 3–5 g of chlorella, taken in tablet or powder form, ideally split through the day. Always choose a chlorella that has been "cracked-cell" processed — the cell wall is otherwise indigestible. Start at a lower dose and build up to allow the digestive system to adapt.
5. Sources
Chlorella is sold as:
- Tablets (most common)
- Powder (mixed into smoothies or juice)
- Liquid extracts
Choose a reputable brand that tests for heavy metals and microcystin contamination, ideally certified organic.
6. Cautions and contraindications
- Chlorella can cause loose stools, gas and bloating in the first few days — reduce the dose if needed.
- Chlorella contains high levels of vitamin K — avoid if you take warfarin or other anticoagulants without medical supervision.
- Avoid if you are allergic to moulds or have iodine sensitivity.
- Choose batch-tested products to avoid heavy metal or microcystin contamination.
- Always consult with a fertility specialist or your doctor before starting any new supplement regime.
