1. What is turmeric?
Turmeric is the bright yellow spice from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, used in Indian cooking for thousands of years and prized in Ayurvedic medicine as a powerful anti-inflammatory and liver-supportive herb. The active compound, curcumin, is one of the most extensively researched natural anti-inflammatory agents.
In TCM terms, turmeric is warming and acts to move Blood stasis — making it particularly useful for endometriosis, a common Blood-stasis pattern. Reference ranges and recommended intakes vary from country to country — always interpret guidance against the recommendations of your own healthcare authority.
2. Function and how it works
Turmeric supports fertility through:
- Anti-inflammatory action. Curcumin reduces inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins, helping with endometriosis pain and pelvic inflammation.
- Antioxidant defence. Curcumin neutralises free radicals and increases the body's own antioxidant enzymes.
- Liver support. Turmeric supports liver function and improves the clearance of excess oestrogens.
- Blood circulation. Turmeric improves microcirculation and reduces blood stasis — relevant in endometriosis and adenomyosis.
- Reduces endometriosis lesion growth. Curcumin has been shown in research to reduce the growth of endometriosis tissue.
3. Fertility benefits
Turmeric is particularly useful for women with:
- Endometriosis
- Adenomyosis
- Heavy painful periods (Blood stasis pattern)
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Oestrogen-dominance signs
For maximum effect, combine turmeric with bromelain (which increases curcumin absorption) and black pepper (which contains piperine, a known curcumin absorption enhancer).
4. Recommended daily dose
I recommend a daily dose of 1,000 mg of standardised curcumin extract for women with endometriosis or related conditions. Choose a formula that includes piperine (black pepper extract) or that uses a high-bioavailability technology (liposomal, phytosomal, micellar) — plain curcumin is poorly absorbed.
5. Food sources
Turmeric is widely used in cooking:
- Fresh turmeric root
- Turmeric powder (in curries, soups, stews, golden milk)
- Turmeric tea
Culinary turmeric provides modest curcumin doses; for therapeutic effect, supplementation is usually needed.
6. Cautions and contraindications
- Turmeric has mild blood-thinning effects — do not combine with anticoagulant medication without medical supervision.
- Stop turmeric supplements at least two weeks before any planned surgery.
- Discuss with your doctor before use if you have gallstones or biliary obstruction — turmeric stimulates bile flow.
- High-dose curcumin during pregnancy is not recommended — discontinue once pregnancy is confirmed.
- Always consult with a fertility specialist or your doctor before starting any new supplement regime.
