1. Overview
GB 1 — Tóng Zǐ Liáo (瞳子髎) — is an acupuncture point on the Gallbladder meridian. Its English name, Pupil Bone Hole, reflects the point’s classical character and location. It is used regularly in acupuncture practice for a range of conditions.

2. Location
0.5 cun lateral to the outer canthus of the eye, in the depression on the lateral border of the orbit.
3. Actions
- Benefits the eyes — primary lateral eye point
- Expels Wind and clears Heat from the eyes
- Relieves temporal headache
- Meeting point of Gallbladder, Small Intestine and Triple Burner meridians
4. Indications
- Eye disorders — red eyes, painful eyes, blurred vision, photophobia
- Temporal headache and migraine
- Facial paralysis affecting the lateral eye
- Crow's feet and periorbital tension
5. Needling
Transverse insertion 0.5–0.8 cun directed posteriorly.
Important: Acupuncture should only be performed by a fully qualified practitioner. All needles I use are sterile, single-use and disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after treatment.
6. Clinical notes
GB 1 is the origin point of the Gallbladder meridian and the primary local point for the lateral aspect of the eye. It meets the Small Intestine and Triple Burner meridians at the outer canthus. Combined with BL 1, GB 14 and Taiyang it forms the comprehensive local eye prescription. Also used cosmetically and for periorbital tension headache.
