Yang tonics — Chinese herbs that warm and tonify Yang (补阳药)

Yang tonics (补阳药, bu yang yao) are warm-natured herbs that strengthen the warming, propelling, transformative function of the Kidney Yang. They are indicated in the great clinical picture of Yang deficiency: cold extremities, aversion to cold, deep fatigue, low libido, impotence, infertility from cold uterus or poor sperm motility, chronic low back pain with cold features, urinary frequency and nocturia, early morning watery diarrhoea, and oedema.

Clinical use and key formulas

The principal foundational formula is Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet’s Kidney Qi Pill) from the Han-dynasty Jin Gui Yao Lue. The formula adds Fu Zi and Rou Gui to a Yin-tonifying base — reflecting the classical principle that “to tonify Yang one must look within Yin to seek Yang”. For more substantial Yang deficiency, You Gui Wan adds Du Zhong, Tu Si Zi, Gou Qi Zi and Lu Jiao Jiao (with plant substitutes in my clinic). See the deep article on Kidney and Bladder disorders for the full clinical framework.

Cautions

Yang tonics are warm to hot in nature. Use with great care in patients with Yin deficiency (the warming will further deplete the already-empty Yin), in patients with empty heat (will worsen the heat), and in pregnancy. Aphrodisiac-marketed single-herb yang tonics taken without proper TCM diagnosis are a frequent cause of iatrogenic worsening of Yin deficiency — always consult a qualified TCM practitioner.
