What is Yu Nu Jian?

Yu Nu Jian — Jade Lady Decoction — is a classical Ming dynasty formula from Zhang Jingyue’s Jing Yue Quan Shu (1624). It is widely used in Chinese herbal medicine for the combined pattern of Stomach Fire and Kidney Yin deficiency, classically presenting with toothache, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, thirst and irritability.

I prescribe Yu Nu Jian as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.

Yu Nu Jian TCM pattern

Prescribed for blazing Stomach Fire with Kidney Yin deficiency: severe toothache or dental pain, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth, thirst for cold drinks, possible nausea, occasional headache at the temples, dry red tongue with yellow coat and a slippery rapid forceful pulse.

Key herbs

  1. Shi Gao — clears Stomach Fire
  2. Shu Di Huang — nourishes Kidney Yin
  3. Mai Men Dong — nourishes Stomach Yin and generates fluids
  4. Zhi Mu — clears Lung and Stomach heat and nourishes Yin
  5. Niu Xi — conducts heat downwards out of the upper Burner

Formula actions
