The Kidney in Chinese medicine
The Kidney (Shen, 肾) is the “Root of Life” in Chinese medicine. It stores the inherited constitutional essence (Jing), houses the foundational Yin and Yang of the entire body, and governs reproduction, growth, development and ageing. Almost every chronic, deep, constitutional or age-related condition involves the Kidney; the same applies to fertility, sexual function, bone health and brain function. The TCM Kidney is anatomically the Western kidney plus the adrenals plus aspects of the reproductive endocrine axis. Paired with the Urinary Bladder; element Water; season Winter; sense organ the ears; emotion fear; tissue bones (manifests in the hair); houses the Zhi (Will-Power).
Functions of the Kidney
- Stores Essence (Jing) — the deep, inherited constitutional resource that determines lifespan, fertility, growth, development and ageing
- Foundation of Yin and Yang — Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang are the roots of the Yin and Yang of every other organ; chronic deficiency of any organ ultimately depletes the Kidney
- Produces Marrow, fills the brain — bone marrow, spinal marrow and brain tissue (“Sea of Marrow”) all derive from Kidney Essence. Cognitive function, memory and dementia all link to Kidney Essence.
- Governs water metabolism — the Kidney distinguishes and transforms fluids in concert with the Lung and Spleen
- Receives Qi (grasps the inhaled Qi) — Kidney holds down the descending Qi from the Lung, supporting deep inhalation. Kidney failure to receive Qi produces shortness of breath on exertion and difficult deep breaths.
- Controls bones, manifests in the hair — bone density, dental health, and the lustre and density of the head hair all reflect Kidney function
- Opens into the ears — hearing and tinnitus relate to Kidney function; chronic tinnitus is the most classical Kidney symptom
- Controls the two lower orifices — urination and defecation; controls reproduction and sexual function
- Houses the Zhi (Will-Power) — sustained drive, perseverance and the capacity to follow through
Kidney and Urinary Bladder pair
The Kidney is paired with the Urinary Bladder. The Bladder receives and excretes impure fluids; the Kidney provides the Qi-transformation that enables this. Recurrent urinary infections and stress incontinence often reflect Kidney Qi or Yang deficiency rather than a primary Bladder problem.
Mingmen — the Gate of Life
Between the two Kidneys lies the Mingmen (命门, “Gate of Life”) — the source of constitutional fire / Kidney Yang for the whole body. The acupuncture point GV 4 (Mingmen) is the surface expression. Tonifying Mingmen through moxibustion is one of the strongest TCM interventions for Kidney Yang deficiency.
Common patterns of Kidney disharmony
- Kidney Yin deficiency — hot flushes, night sweats, dry mouth at night, low back ache, tinnitus, dizziness, restless insomnia, dry hair and skin. The classical pattern of menopause and chronic ageing.
- Kidney Yang deficiency — cold limbs, lower back coldness, fatigue, frequent pale urination, loose early-morning stools, impotence, lack of libido, infertility
- Kidney Yin and Yang both deficient — combined pattern of constitutional depletion, common in advanced age and chronic disease
- Kidney Essence (Jing) deficiency — delayed development in children, premature ageing, infertility, premature grey hair, loose teeth, dementia, recurrent miscarriage
- Kidney Qi not grasping — chronic shortness of breath on exertion, difficult deep inhalation; common in chronic asthma and old age
- Kidney not holding (Bu Gu) — urinary leakage, nocturia, premature ejaculation, miscarriage
Conditions on this site relating to Kidney disharmony
Menopausal symptoms, all fertility problems (low AMH, high FSH, premature ovarian failure, male infertility, recurrent miscarriage), tinnitus, hearing loss, low back pain, recurrent UTIs, chronic fatigue syndrome, burnout, asthma (long-standing with breathlessness on exertion), osteoporosis, hair loss, and many presentations of insomnia.
Treatment principles for the Kidney
Core acupuncture points include KD 3 (Taixi) (Yuan-source; tonifies Kidney Yin and Yang — the most-used Kidney point), KD 6 (Zhaohai) (nourishes Kidney Yin; opens Yin Qiao Mai), KD 7 (Fuliu) (tonifies Kidney Yang; stops night sweats), BL 23 (Shenshu) as the Back-Shu, GV 4 (Mingmen) as the Gate of Life (with moxa for Kidney Yang) and CV 4 (Guanyuan) for the lower Dantian and reproductive support. Foundational formulas include Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Kidney Yin deficiency — the master Yin tonic), Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Yang deficiency), Zuo Gui Wan (Kidney Yin/Essence) and You Gui Wan (Kidney Yang/Essence).
