Huang Lian Shang Qing Pian is a strongly cooling Chinese patent remedy for the “fire in the head” picture — a pounding headache with red eyes, mouth ulcers, a sore throat and constipation. Huang Lian Shang Qing Pian (“Coptis Clear the Upper Tablet”) is an over-the-counter formula that drains Fire and clears Heat-toxicity from the head and upper body. It is a bitter, cold formula for short, acute use when Heat signs flare.

Traditionally used for excess Heat and Fire rising to the head:

Headache with a red face and a feeling of heat
Mouth and gum ulcers, and a sore, dry throat
Red, sore, gritty eyes
Toothache and swollen, hot gums
Constipation with dark urine on a Heat background

3. Key ingredients

It combines the bitter Heat-clearing “three yellows” — Huang Lian, Huang Qin and Huang Bai — with Zhi Zi (gardenia), Da Huang (rhubarb) to drain Fire downward, and surface-clearing herbs such as Bo He (mint) and Jing Jie. It contains no animal products.

4. Safety and cautions

Short-term acute use only — it is very cold and contains Da Huang (rhubarb), a purgative; prolonged use damages the digestion.
Contraindicated in pregnancy — it contains Da Huang.
Not for cold or deficient patterns, or for loose stools; it will worsen them.
Persistent or severe headache, eye pain, dental infection or throat problems need medical or dental assessment, not repeated self-medication. Always have Chinese herbal medicine prescribed by a herbalist registered with the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM).

Why does it cause loose stools?

It contains Da Huang (rhubarb), which drains Fire downward through the bowel, so a looser stool is part of its action. That is also why it is for short-term use only and is avoided in pregnancy and in cold or deficient digestion.

How long can I take it for?

Only a few days, for an acute Heat flare. It is very cold and purgative, so prolonged use weakens the digestion; if symptoms persist, stop and seek advice.
